5 Essential Things Every Girl Should Know Before Attending Summer Camp

Summer camp is something you remember. Even if it’s not your first year, you know how much fun it’s going to be. But, before bags are packed and off you go, here are a few things every girl should know in order to make the most of her camp experience.

1. Be Open To New Experiences

Camp is all about trying new things, so be prepared with a willing mind! You will be challenged to do things you’ve never done before, like rock climbing, crafts, or a talent show. Some will be scary at first, but trust us, stepping out of your comfort zone is where the best moments come. Even if you feel nervous, breathe deeply and give it a shot. If you don’t like it, that’s alright too.

2. It's Alright To Feel Homesick

It is normal to feel homesick, and if it is your first time being away from home for a long time, be prepared. When you start missing your family or your routine at home, be reassured that you are not alone. Many of the other girls at camp feel the same way. It’s okay to talk about it with your camp counselors or friends, who are there to support you. As the days go by, you’ll likely start to feel more at ease and find comfort in the friendships you’re building

3. New friendships and New Memories

Camp is the perfect place to make new friends. Either you make friends with someone while doing an activity or you have a cabin buddy that becomes a friend, there are great opportunities to bond. Everyone is at camp to have fun and create memories that will last a lifetime. Don’t be shy, approach someone or invite someone to do an activity with you. You’ll be surprised at how quickly friendships develop when everyone is being friendly and making an effort

4. It's All About Teamwork

You will find yourself working in groups quite often at camp, whether for challenges, group projects, or games. Becoming a team player is a large part of life at camp. This can sometimes mean compromising, communicating, and lifting one another up. Don’t forget, it’s not always about being the best at something, it’s about doing your share, being supportive, and appreciating each other’s strengths.

5. Don't Forget to Pack Smart!

Packing is tricky, but if you have an idea what to bring, it’s no problem. Don’t overdo it, bring what you require and leave space for all the good stuff you’ll acquire on the road. A few essentials are comfortable gear for outdoor pursuits, a bathing suit for splash time, a sweatshirt for cooler evenings, and plenty of sunscreen. Take a look at your camp’s packing list to be sure you’re not forgetting anything.
